Meet Mary Fox

I was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1959 and moved with my family to British Columbia in 1966. I am a self-taught exploratory potter and have never done anything else for a living. I like to joke about this and often say to my customers that this is why I am so bruised, I learned at the school of hard knocks!

Love how this bowl turned out! It’s evokes looking into a molten crater to me ❤️🦊#author #mylifeasapotter #givingbacktothecommunity
I was treated to a visit with a piece I had made back in the 80's the other day. A collector had recently purchased it and emailed about coming in for a studio visit. I asked if he would bring his find with him so that I could photograph it. As he lifted it carefully out of the box and placed it on my desk I was transported back to that time period. I made quite a few of these "Treasure jars" back in the 80's and this was a particularly nice one. Great score! and a beautiful moment in my day for me. ❤️🦊@charlesrea.studio
Another example of the great depth of variety you can achieve by applying a glaze in different ways. All the glazes in my upcoming book are easy to make, cheap and, with the exception of 2, use readily available ingredients. Have you read My Life as a Potter yet? It’s a terrific warm up to what I’m going to share with you in my next book. All my books are fundraisers for my Legacy Project, enjoy a good read, learn loads and give back at the same time. It’s a good thing! ❤️🦊 @harbour_publishing @canadians.giving.back
I get a wee break from the book, the first draft with my changes is on the designer’s desk. I’m grateful for a break, the layout stage has been challenging, a how to book is not the easiest. I’ve been wondering which of the new effects in the book will be the potter’s favourite. I rather suspect this combination will be on or near the top. It’s very easy and you can get many different results. Here are 2 vessels, very different from one another but using the same glaze. #canadianauthor #mylifeasapotter #foxthatpots
❤️ Thanks to all of you for gifting My Life as a Potter. My heart grows two sizes when I see that we are #1 in the most gifted book category - this book and the next one are fundraisers for the Mary Fox Legacy Project. Thanks for helping the potters of today and tomorrow by your purchase, it’s a good thing ❤️❤️❤️🦊 @harbour_publishing
It’s been quite awhile since I’ve had a 04 reduction firing. This large vase, 55cmT, was created about a decade ago as part of my Relic series. I’d often thought of doing a bit more work on it but then would move on to something else. Last week I applied a light dusting of lithium compound on and included it in the firing. As I lifted it out of the kiln I knew that this was her last firing, couldn’t be happier with the results. 🦊❤️
This reminds me of when my first book was going through one of its edits and I was asked if I meant “Nerves of Steel “ when I had written “Ovaries of Steel “ of course I meant, Ovaries of Steel!!! I am in the design stage of my second book ‘Developing Glazes for low fire reduction and oxidation’ Sadly, I didn’t write anything in this book where I could have used this term. 😜🤣🤣🤣❤️🦊 #mylifeasapotter #canadianauthor #ownourpower
A thought for our times ❤️🦊
