Future Program | Phase 3 — Potters of Tomorrow

The Artist in Residence program is the third phase of the Mary Fox Legacy Project and is part of Mary’s long-term vision for continuing to share her knowledge and experience with emerging ceramic artists.

The program will be established following Mary’s passing and is intended to become a lasting part of the Legacy Project, creating opportunities for future generations of potters to learn, experiment, develop their skills, and establish their own creative practices.

A Two-Year Residency

The program will offer an emerging ceramic artist a two-year residency at Legacy Studios in Ladysmith, British Columbia. The residency will provide the opportunity to experience life as a working studio potter within an integrated studio and gallery environment.

The Artist in Residence will have full access to the pottery studio and the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work through the gallery. The residency is intended to provide not only workspace and resources, but also an environment in which the artist can develop their skills, explore new ideas, and grow their individual artistic practice.

Responsibilities

The Artist in Residence will be responsible for their own materials and supplies, utility costs, and housing. They will also be responsible for keeping the pottery open to the public during the agreed-upon gallery hours.

The Mary Fox Legacy Project will provide studio and gallery space and will cover associated building and maintenance costs.

Exploring Housing Support

We recognize that housing can be a significant challenge for emerging artists. As part of our fundraising efforts, we are exploring the possibility of providing financial assistance toward housing for the future Artist in Residence.

This initiative is still in its preliminary stages. The amount of support, if any, will depend on the funds we are ultimately able to raise, and housing assistance cannot be guaranteed. Details of any housing support will be determined as the project develops.

To help support the long-term sustainability of the Mary Fox Legacy Project, we have established an endowment fund through the Vancouver Foundation and the Craft Council of British Columbia. The principal of the endowment will remain invested, while the income generated will provide ongoing support for the Legacy Project.

We are also raising funds to explore housing support for future Artists in Residence.

The Artist in Residence program is part of a larger vision to ensure that Mary’s knowledge, experience, and commitment to mentorship continue to benefit ceramic artists well into the future.
